Top Museums in Athens

Acropolis Museum – This impressive building, built across the Acropolis itself, reopened in 2009. It houses the precious artefacts that have been found on the sacred rock of Acropolis.  The artefacts span a period from the Mycenaean times up to the Roman and Early Christian Athens.

The National Archaeological Museum – The largest museum in Greece is enriched with finds from all over Greece. The collections on display comprise of more than 11,000 historic pieces which altogether showcase a panorama of Greek civilization from the dawn of prehistory to late antiquity.

The Benaki Museum – The museum is a collection of donations from various Greek collectors including works of art, paintings, rare manuscripts, books, byzantine icons and archaeological findings from all of the historic periods of Greece.

The Museum of Cycladic Art – This museum is dedicated to the ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus focusing on Cycladic Art.

The Byzantine and Christian Museum – Here, religious artefacts of the Byzantine and later periods are featured from all over Greece.  The museum has over 25,000 artefacts dating from between the 3rd and 20th century AD.

The Athens City Museum –   The Athens City Museum tells a story of the modern history of Athens from the time that Athens became the capital of Greece. It showcases many paintings, individual collections and artefacts the early 19th century to the middle 20th century.
